Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how we live and work—and Virginia is making sure our students are ready for it. In response to a new federal push to expand AI in K-12 education, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is rolling out plans, training, and policies to guide the responsible use of AI in schools.
This effort is backed by Governor Youngkin’s Executive Order 30, which calls for guardrails around how AI is used across state agencies—including schools.
What’s Already Happening in Virginia
Here are the major efforts school board members should know:
This order directs VDOE to:
-
Develop tools and resources for schools to use AI effectively.
-
Make sure AI is used ethically, safely, and securely.
-
Follow a formal approval process for any AI-related tools or software.
These guidelines explain how AI should be used in schools:
-
AI should help teachers—not replace them.
-
Student privacy and data security must come first.
-
Schools should teach students how to use AI responsibly.
-
Teachers need training and clear policies about when and how AI can be used in the classroom.
School boards play a key role by:
-
Approving clear rules for student use of AI (like acceptable use and honor codes).
-
Supporting teacher training on how to use AI tools.
-
Making sure digital citizenship and ethics are built into instruction.
This is Virginia’s roadmap for using technology—including AI—in schools. Key goals include:
-
Expanding internet and device access for all students.
-
Training teachers on the new 2024 Computer Science Standards, which now include AI skills.
-
Offering free resources and workshops to help teachers use AI responsibly.
-
Promoting safe online practices and student data protection.

What School Board Members Should Do
Review Your Policies
Make sure your division has updated acceptable use, data privacy, and AI ethics policies that align with VDOE guidance and EO-30.
Support Teacher Training
Encourage your superintendent to take advantage of VDOE’s free training resources.
Stay Informed and Involved
Ask your division leaders how they’re preparing students and teachers for AI. Support open conversations with parents, teachers, and the community.

Bottom Line for Board Members
Virginia is taking AI seriously—and your school division should too. The goal isn’t to overwhelm schools with new tech, but to give students the skills they need to succeed in an AI-driven world, while keeping classrooms safe, ethical, and teacher-led.
