Hello,

I teach Drama to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Old Orchard Junior High School. Each year, we perform two school plays. (This is an extra-curricular activity that students can join.) I'm searching for good scripts for these performances, and I'm hoping to get some suggestions from this discussion board! What plays have you performed at your middle school? Which plays have been most successful at your school? What resources do you use to find plays?

Thanks!

Melinda

Hi Melinda!

At WJHS we currently do one musical a year, and so far, we've used Broadway, Jr., because I really like the CD accompaniment. Sounds like you're looking for straight plays. I have some I've collected, though never put up, that you're welcome to borrow if you'd like. Try Dramatic Publishing - I spoke to a rep from them at AATE and they were really helpful and have lots to peruse.

Keep me posted!

Dinah

Hi Melinda,

I know this is about 5 months late, but I thought I'd share. I teach Drama to 6-8 graders at Northbrook Junior High. We do a musical every year, plus a Talent Show and "Coffeehouse" (NBJH Unplugged). I agree with Dinah that Broadway Jr. is the way to go - good variety & reasonable prices. I would avoid Pioneer or Contemporary Publishing - they're inexpensive, but corny & not very challenging (eith musicals or straight plays).

Have you ever given thought to a competitive speaking group (similar to high school I.E.), only for junior high kids?? I'm trying to gauge the level of interest!

Good luck!  David Downing
