AWARD OF HONOR: GOODMAN THEATRE'S COMMUNITY AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Goodman Theatre, Chicago’s oldest and largest not-for-profit theatre, has won international renown for the quality of productions, the depth and diversity of artistic leadership, and the excellence of its many community and educational programs. Central to that mission is theatre artists whose distinctive visions have given the Goodman an artistic identity of uncommon richness and variety. Part of that richness and variety are the educational programs that the Goodman offers.
Since its inception, the Goodman has embraced educational programs as a vital part of its mission. The oldest component of Goodman’s programming is the Student Subscription Series, which has served as a national model for arts education for the past 24 years. Offered free to participating schools, the program provides the foundation for lifelong appreciation of theatre to thousands of Chicago public high school students.
To reach out to teachers who may not qualify for the Series, the Goodman offers a 15-hour workshop, Dramatic Integration: Using Theater to Teach Everything.
The Cindy Bandle Young Critics program is a joint venture with the Association for Women Journalists and is for 11th grade girls from all over Chicagoland. Participants see shows on press night, write reviews, and work with professional mentors to develop their voices.
The General Theater Studies Program targets middle achievers- an often overlooked group of students who have historically not received individual attention to encourage them to realize their potential.
In addition to these programs for high school students, the Goodman also offers internships in management and production for post-secondary students and early career professionals. For life-long learners, the Goodman’s CONTEXT events concentrate on particular issues raised within the plays and explore how they resonate in today’s culture by offering public space for debate and discussion.
The Illinois Theatre Association is pleased to present their 2009 Award of Honor to a Non-Member to Goodman Theatre’s Community and Educational Programs. Accepting the award is Willa Taylor, Director of the Program.
